The Highways Agency is warning drivers to check their fuel after 15,000 drivers ran out of fuel in just over 12 months. On average 43 cars ran out of fuel a day between 1st July 2008 and 30th June 2009 with many breaking down in dangerous or disruptive places.
The Highways Agency's boss Derek Turner, said: 'The number of people breaking down simply because they have run out of fuel is alarming. It's not only hazardous to the driver and passengers, but to other road users as well, especially if the vehicle has to stop in a live lane.'
The Agency is urging drivers to continually monitor fuel levels over long distances and to not take the risk of trying to complete journeys on low levels of fuel.
