GM and Chrysler LLC sales drop in July (U.S)

After reporting a massive loss of a staggering $15.5 billion in the second quarter of 2008, GM also reported that the sales of its vehicles have dropped by 26.7% in July to 235,184 units.

According to GM’s data, July’s car sales were down 2.1% to 105,335 units, while light truck sales fell by 35.4%, down to 129,849 units. Beyond the negative headlines, GM saw the Chevrolet Malibu total sales go up 79% and the Aveo up 17%. The Cadillac CTS sales were up 38%, Saturn Aura up 24% and the Saturn Sky sales up 14% compared to last July.

Chrysler’s 'Let’s Refuel America $2.99 Gas Guarantee' promotion didn’t seem to help much as the troubled American car firm reported July sales of 98,109 units, which is 29% below the same period last year. However, its not all bad news. The Chrysler Town & Country (Grand Voyager overseas) posted a 24% increase with 8,070 sales versus July 2007 sales of 6,513 units while the Dodge Avenger's sales were up 4%.
