Mercedes is readying the next E-Class, which is set to be launched next year. The CLK name will be replaced by E-Class coupe and E-Class cabriolet names. The CLK until now has been based on E-Class underpinnings, but this new-generation model, due for launch next summer is to get an all-new chassis derived from that of the C-Class. Though a little larger than the outgoing model, with improved cabin space, it will be considerably sportier. For the first time, the cabriolet model has been spied.
Engines will be borrowed from the current C-Class, though further down the line the 'downsized' DiesOtto technology will be applied, and there may also be a hybrid, probably with a 'mild' petrol-electric system like that of the upcoming S400 BlueHybrid.
The E-Class wagon is currently undergoing testing through-out Europe. The newcomer will hint at Mercedes' ConceptFascination, shown at this months Paris autoshow. Mercedes is planning to downsize its petrol engines, maintaining performance by adding turbochargers, although this E-Class may start out with some naturally aspirated V6 and V8 units. Expect a high-output four-cylinder at some point, however, such as the 1.8 litre spark-ignition, direct-injection unit in the F700 concept car. The diesels will have the latest Bluetec exhaust-catalyst technology, enabling them to meet U.S emissions standards. The wagon will be launched at Autumn's Frankfurt motorshow in 2009. New equipment will include wet-weather brake disc wiping; wheel-selective cornering brake control; stability control that is sensitive to crosswinds, tyre wear and road camber; and more driver assistance devices such as driver fatigue sensors, lane-departure warning and traffic sign identification.
The E63 AMG should reach showrooms sometime in 2010 with a 6.3 litre, 500bhp+ V8 under the hood. Like its siblings, the E63 AMG will take hints of the ConceptFascination. In addition to the sedan, a wagon will join the range later on. The E63 AMG will get standard carbon-ceramic brake discs, optional in other E-Class variants.
A saloon and coupe will be the first variants to arrive in 2009. Estate, convertible and AMG versions will arrive in 2010. A shooting brake variant is expected around 2011.
